okay, i have my server up and ready, but every time i start it, i can't see it either online or on the LAN. and it gives me this IP address: 192.168.1.103:27016 which is apart of my LAN address. wtf? i have sv_lan set to 0.

edit

i use the ping command in the server, and it says 'not connected'... how do i connect? Embarassed

Since your server is ran off a LAN, you specifically will connect via the 192.168 address, whereas everyone else will connect with your external ip (see whatismyip.org).

Also, try restarting the server a few times until the port opens to 27015, as 27016 isn't good to attract players.

He probably set the port to 27016 so he can play on the same machine. I do the same at home as I don't have a spare machine to run the servers on exclusively.

You can connect through either the internal or external IP...he should see his external IP in the serverbrowser. If he doesn't see it, no one else will either. My guess is you're behind a firewall and you need to open certain ports for the server to show in the browser.

Try opening the following ports:
TCP 27010-27050
UDP 1200
UDP 27000-27020

i use zone alarm, and i've allready okayed the ports. i've even turned it off and tried it. what im going to do is reformat. i need to do this anyways, haven't done it in a long time. after that, i can start off fresh. what i think is the problem is a virus got into me. i recently discovered a trojan, it probably led something else in.

I'm not talking about a "software" firewall...I was more addressing the issue of "are you behind a router". If you are...you'll need to open those ports on your router.

www.portforward.com

Lemme splain ...

You "may" also need to forward your ports...not just open them. For instance...I have 4 machines on the same router. You need (sometimes) to tell your router which of the machines will be using those ports.

You will need to assign each machine on the network it's own internal IP (lan IP)...so it won't change. If you let your router set them dynamically...the same machine that runs the server could be issued a different internal IP (lan IP) each time you boot it up.

Check out the site above for info relative to your router model...there's some good stuff in there.

hum maybe i should think about this... connecting to a server in miami...:
dslreports.com speed test result on 2006-08-22 01:07:44 EST:
1729 / 5957
Your download speed : 1729 kbps or 216.2 KB/sec.
Your upload speed is much faster than down.. have you tweaked?

Your upload speed : 5957 kbps or 744.7 KB/sec.

i'm guessing my college caps the DL speed.

If you're using an official college net hook-up, I'd bet you have a bandwith quota too. Run a TFC server, and you'll exceed it in a few days

Im having trouble with Admin Mod. I put my steamid and everything into the users.ini file to get more admin access. So when i go into the server none of the scripts work or commands work, but when i leave the users.ini file empty the scripts work fine!?!? i set them up how the tutorial says too.

does anyone know whats going on or had the same problem? Sad Question

Just so we're clear...the users.ini file should be set up with your ID as follows:
STEAM_0:X:XXXXXX:pw-here:114687

Steam Id, password and access level...each separated by a colon. Give yourself the access level above, 114687; that's full access without reserved names. I always had trouble with that and your really don't need it anyway.

Is this a listenserver? If so, the above does not apply as your steam ID is not verified...you must set it up with the "name" you will use. Obviously, you need to use the same name each time you log in.

TBH...the users.ini file has nothing to do with whether or not the scripts work...only whether or not you have authority to use adminmod. Confused
