if you believe some of the physicists opposed to the new 17 mile long Large Hadron Collider ring in Switzerland and France.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080628/ap_on_re_eu/doomsday_collider

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider

The end is NEAR!!

If it is, there are many among us battle-tested and highly prepared to combat the onslaught of hideous creatures sure to be spawned by such a catastrophe.

Gordon, where are you!!

I've been reading about this collider for years in MIT's magazine Technology Review. And now that we actually completed the project it got shut down! While I'm skeptical about what good information this project will produce, I am very, very hopeful.

"On 10 September 2008 the LHC accelerated its first proton streams, only to have operations suspended on 19 September 2008 due to equipment failure.[3] Owing to the already planned winter shutdown, the collider will not be operational again until the spring of 2009.[4][5]"

From wikipedia, it was in the news also, that's where i originally heard.

From what I understand, the super magnets are so cold that, to service them, it takes like a week to warm up and another to cool back down. Any little maintenance thing is going to take a while.

Didn't know about the winter shutdown, that sucks.
