I'll take any excuse to break the monotany. Hallmark or not.
I mean I'm not christian so x-mas and easter should be out. I still exchange gifts and candy on those days.
Thanksgiving was based on not being able feed the animals for the winter. Suddenly theres no animals but a great feast for all! Come that day I'm stuffing my face with turkey and stuffing.
Not to mention Halloween and the litany of pagan holidays I celebrate with freinds even though I dont follow their traditions.
I dont get all this anti-valentines day stuff. I know some people are single and it sucks, but why not just celebrate the love of friends and family instead? If there really is no love in life to celebrate, theres bigger problems than a silly holiday.  Does everyone hate their anniversaries too?  I guess people just take this holiday too seriously. |

Most of my friends had dates. lol.
I was the driver for the night and ended up drinking a lot of Finlandia vodka. lol. |

glad someone else was confuzzled by everyone hating this day. is it seriously wrong to have a day out of the year that everyone can celebrate love thats had with a certain someone, friends or family? no one puts a gun to your head and forces you to buy anything for anyone. btw, every holiday is made up. |

I don't think it is so much the idea or tradition of the day that irks people. It has become an event which is now commercially driven and as such there is more emphasis on consumerism and presents than "love".
One thing you have to remember is that valentines day is primarily derived from a Christian tradition and was used to celebrate romantic association with your mate. It has now been sidelined to some tacky stuffed animal with a love heart on its chest and glutinous devouring of chocolates.
It does make you feel lonely when you are single though.... |
