For starters you can go into your connection settings and reset it to Cable and this will reset some of the settings that you may have messed with. |

Lower your updaterate until you get no choke, and put your cmdrate to whatever your average FPS is. |

cl_updaterate is the amount of updates you request FROM the server pertaining to all player actions in your vis area, this is a lot more connection intensive because it's not just one person's data, it's potentially 10-20 people's. It's pointless setting either of these commands to a level higher than your fps, since your PC can only update the server for every frame it generates, and your PC only updates your display for every frame update it receives at best. Setting your cmdrate/updaterate higher than your fps just wastes bandwidth.
setting cmdrate/updaterate to higher levels typically allow a smoother experience for playing / concing, but can cause 'weird' lag, usually resulting in jerky movements, sticking to players, grens blowing up early etc. I've got ADSL and 100 fps, I use 100/100 and it works fine for me. When I was on ADSL, i used 50/50 and got a lot of choke, but it made concing a lot easier.
modem: cmdrate 30-35 / updaterate 20-30
ISDN: cmdrate 50-70 / updaterate 40-50
ADSL/Cable: cmdrate 70-100 / updaterate 50-100 (depends how much your connection can take and how good the server is, as well as your fps)." |
