i'm actually in the process of finally getting a computer for my room
I'm just gettin something simple and under $1000 too, nothing special. Gonna most likely get a Dell Dimension C521 http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/dimen_c521?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn, w/ 17" flatscreen, couple speakers, keyboard, blah blah etc...Pretty compact too, and for $799. Gonna have to get a wireless router too because the cable modem is on the current computer we have now. |

I had my last computer built here:
http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/
Many choices of gaming rigs...and each is highly customizable. Depending on whether you're an AMD or Intel man, or whether you want a new display or not...they have many configurations in that price range.
Of course, there's only a million other places you could look as well. |

my advice: stick with an intel DUO processor. they kick soooo much ass. AMD doesn't come close.
and stick with windows XP. vista is gonna be buggy as hell for a while. |

Ebay is a good place to look as well.
Thats where I am getting my next tower from. You can get some cheap barebone systems and then buy cards and ram off ebay too for cheap. |

If you want something pre-built, try www.dell.com. Pick are fairly low cost system then spend some time playing with configurations. Maybe an E520.
If you want to build it yourself, try www.newegg.com. Their site provides tons of info on each component and barebones systems to use as a starting point. The site is also good at picking parts in a given price range.
Ebay is the best bang for the buck, but I think it would be risky for a first time builder to try using ebay parts.
I also recommend staying with XP instead of Vista, but if you buy from Dell there probably won't be any choice in the matter. Don't forget to budget for XP if you build your own and don't have a copy already.
Don't worry if you can't afford the fanciest video card. A card upgrade a few years down the road should still give the system a decent life span.
You are going to want 512Mb on the video card, buy may have to settle for 256Mb for now. |

Not to go off topic, but since you wrote out what DIY was, how did you not go back and fix "DYI"?
LLO! (lauging out loud) |

I'd rather buy a pre-built system... And, my price range has just gone up to about $1200 (including tax and shipping )
In short, I need a new gaming rig, as mine is getting rather old, and is almost unplayable as of late... I think my video card is finally starting to go. And since I have a motherboard which is only capable of handling AGP cards, I might as well just buy a whole new rig...
It would also be nice to have a beater machine around for file storage and stuff, which is why I dont want to cannibalize my old monitor/kb/mouse/etc for the new rig.
Anyone have any specific suggestions or anything? |

I would suggest a Dell XPS 410 if you can fit it in your budget. It will be close. Depends on if your budget includes the router and wireless adapter for the PC. If thats too much, the Dell Dimension E520 would fit in the budget even with the wireless gear. |

i read that the power of AGP has not yet been tapped out, even though pci express is here w/ so much more bandwidth available to a video card.
go to www.outpost.com its fry's electronics in california. i get most of my comp stuff cheap there. |

Newegg is a pretty good place for Parts and some PC's,
but you may consider elsewhere for a straight-foward build.
I say, Upgrade to PCI-E. More Bandwith, and you're set for future developments.
Dell is good, I reccomend buying one from them if you can't find something better.

Here's what I would get if I was looking for a PC in that price range on newegg.com.
Antec LifeStyle SONATA II/w 450W PSU - $100
ASUS P5B Deluxe LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard - $180
Intel Pentium D 805 Smithfield 2.66GHz - $75 (This is one of the best OC'ing processors on the market today)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 ST3160811AS 160GB (SATA) - $60
(I personally own 4 of these in my computer)
LITE-ON Black 18X DVD+R - $30
CORSAIR XMS2 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 - $110
EVGA 256-P2-N624-AR GeForce 7900GS $150
ViewSonic Optiquest Series Q7B-3 Black 17" 8ms LCD Monitor - $160
Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard - $70
Razer Krait 1600 dpi 3 button Gaming Mouse - $35
Total - $910 before shipping
Your mobo is Core2Duo ready, and has a ton of bells and whistles.
I personally would go AMD/ATI, but for the price, this is what you want. |
