I had a sound problem on my sons computer were it would read the mics input but you could not hear anything. He has a SB Live sound card and under the speaker selection he had enable digital output. once I disable the digital output then the sound came back. This may or may not be your situation but it might help

Good point Excalibur...although, I would hope that setting wouldn't change by itself. Also, check in the steam audio tab that A3D or EAX support is checked or not. |

I hope it at least verified that your game files are okay. It's weird that you get sound in other programs and windows in general...but not in TFC.
Can you try another steam game...like HL2DM...and see if you have sound there? Just jump on any server and let me know. It could help to narrow it down to an overall steam problem or just with TFC.
I'll take another look in the steam forums and look to see if there are any registry settings unique to sound or voice. I'll let ya know. |

What kind of computer do you have? I have an HP(yeah i know stfu), and my sound quit a little while ago, and no matter how many times I re-installed the sound drivers it wouldn't work. What I finally had to do was order a system recovery disk and use that. It worked but all the settings were messed up, so use it as a last resort. Try reinstaling steam first though. :/ GL |

When you say you have sound in other programs...what programs are we talking about? Not just windows sounds right?
Right click the sound icon in the taskbar...select "Open Volume Control"...is anything muted that shouldn't be? |

Bit of an update... my sound works for windows media and the yahoo players, nothing else works right- flash, half life, tfc, etc dont work. I asked my bro (who works with computers for a living) and he is clueless... I'm gonna try a STEAM re-install and see if it solves anything.
Any more ideas would be splendid! |

If you want my honest opinion, this sounds like a corrupt file. Since you said it works fine in windows and not in any HL program, ill suggest a complete reinstall of half life, tfc, and steam.
As a last resort, you could do a full reformat/reinstall of windows and start over.. |

I would update your sound drivers before considering a reinstall of steam or even windows. You updated your vid drivers...makes sense to update/re-install your sound drivers. That could do the trick if sounds in other programs are faulty also. |
