If price is really no matter, go for a top of the line Falcon Northwest.

3 ghz intel 4 with HT
256MB Video Card (NVidia 5500 FX)
1 Gig of Ram
CD/DVDRW Burner
Really Nice Case
Heatsync fan as big as my palm
120 GB Hard Drive
New Mother Board with intergrated 5.1 Surround Sound Card with TV In/Out
Cost-$700 ($800 with shipping and tax)
www.newegg.com - Some of the best (if not THE best) deals out there for building your own computer or just upgrading an old one.

If u wanna play hl2, this is a perfect PC, i get up to like 150 in clear areas, but in heavy graphic areas, i get around 35 lowest (such as water and bullets and lots of view) and my CPU can multitask tons of stuff.

Agreed, Flexy, except you may want a better video card...

I have a very similar system, custom built, I bought all the parts w/shipping for $946.00

I'll suggest a better video card, such as the one I have --

ATI Raedon 9600 Sapphire Atlantis - 256 mb ram
And I only have a 2.8 ghz processor -
AMD 3200 + 2.8ghz, But I overclock it to 3.2 Smile

Everything else is pretty much the same specs...

I get 180-200 fps in low-detail areas (with all settings on highest)
And 100 or so in high detail areas (with settings on highest)
( I mean on HL2 BTW)

The only other thing I will suggest when buying a PC is, If you can't build it yourself, or have someone else build it for you...

Buy from Falcon Northwest.

They make the best computers that I know of (best quality)

Don't be an idiot and buy an Alienware PC, as the low-end ones are trash, and the high end ones will cost you your first born child.

do you know that apple is ditching the PowerPC line of processors for Intel's Pentium M(p5?); while Microsoft will be using the PowerPC procesor for XBOX360? lolerskates!
apple is making its switch due to processing power per watt being greater in pentium M than in PPC.
microsoft is making its switch for who the hell knows why(actually i forgot).

you don't want to know the specs of my pc lol. My parents bought it in '99. Basically, a piece that needs some work done on it to be improved, or i should plainly get a new one. I have a Pentium 3, a gfx card from '97 and Windows 2000 Professional. This might tell you a little bit of what i run TFC on and why i'm not all that great.

my computer (not this one I'm on) can't handle HL2, but for HL1 its fine. My recomended specs for HL1 are:

400+mhz CPU
4+ Gigs HD space (if only for steam and HL1, more if you want more on your computer)
128+ MB ram
3d card with oncard CPU and at least 32MB video ram
run-of-the-mill sound card

for good frame rates (not the best but little to no lag at 1024x768) on HL2 I recommend:

2.8+mhz cpu
10+ Gig HD (if only for steam and HL2, more if you want more on your computer)
512+MB ram
nvidia TNT riva 128 3d card for DX8 graphics
run-of-the-mill sound card

My computer resembles the first one, but my CPU is 450mhz, I have 128+64=192MB ram, but I only have 3gigs hd space so steam takes up all the hd space and leaves no room for the windows swap file so it lags. I have disks for non-steam HL and op4ce and both run fine but I can't play online.

The computer (it was my roommate's) that I ran HL2 on is exactely the second set of specs, but has 40gigs hd space and a secondary 3d card and monitor which is a life saver when working with multiple windows. However I can't use any DX9 graphics like water and shadows, and the CS graphics tester does not show models made out of water.

If anyone has the DX9 HL2 graphics working, please let me know what video card you are using so I can get that card when I upgrade my computer.

the pentium m is a older laptop CPU based off the p3 that can outpreform P4s(even p4 EE) in most everything and use less power

http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20050525/index.html
^story about how pentium m is better then P4

if money is really no object i would go for SLI with 2 6800 ultra's

Reccomended specs for a gaming computer
500W PSU(for SLI)
Mobo with PCI express SLI compatible
1 GB dual chan. (with the tightest timings you can find)
Some AMD Processor (im a intel guy dunno much about AMD Razz )
probably some sweet case from xoxide.com
200 GB Western digital SATA (IDE if you want to overclock a lot)
nvidia 6800 Ultra, 2 if you want SLI

when i built my computer i built it more for apps and processing then i did for gaming, thats why i went with a p4

MY specs
THERMALTAKE TR2 430W
this computer case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811162002
Western Digital Caviar SE WD2000JD 200GB 7200 RPM 8MB
KINGMAX SuperRAM 1GB PC3200
ABIT IC7-G MAXII
intel Pentium 4 540 running at 3.2GHz
....
and the best part
...
my vid card
my geforce fx 5200 128MB lol
Razz
i ran out of money when i was building it so i bought a cheap one from one of my friends, im soon upgrading to a 6800GT
