3 hard drives, a hitachi deskstar 250GB sata, hitachi deskstar 160GB pata, and a maxtor 80GB pata all make a yawning noise. just now the 2 deskstars(must have been those 2) did it at the same time. i know it doesnt mean that the drives are failing but just wanna know why they do it lol.
ive seen pictures of the deskstar drives w/ the cover off and it seems they have a parking zone that lifts them off to the side of the drive platters, think it could be something to do w/ that?

Hmmm....I know when a drive isn't in use it can power down (if you have power management set to do this)...that can sound similar to what you're describing. It essentiall turns itself off and "spins down" in a high to low noise.

A high pitches squeal is what scares me. I'm hearing it occasionally from my 120 gig Maxtor that houses all my games and servers. It gets a lot of use. It's the same noise I started hearing when my last drive went. Crying or Very sad

<---is hoping that's not the case.

Either give it a nap or some coffee.

(In all seriousness, I have a similar issue with my external)
