I'm looking for a universal file converter, something that will be able to convert music, movies and pictures as well as anything else that need be. Anybody know of some good ones out there? |

If one existed...it would cost a pretty penny.
I wouldn't want to be compressing video with a program that specializes is audio conversion. I'd use something like Vegas or Premiere to do that; which also do audio quite well, but not pictures. Also, it's typical for higher end programs to have full input/output reading and rendering capabilities. I'm talking about what type of files can be input and what can be converted to whatever output you want. A low end program might only turn a wav into an mp3...not a lot of options there.
Depending on what file types you're looking to convert into what...there really is no all encompassing answer. You'll be better off finding something that does the best at each category...video, pictures and music.
Pictures:
Management and quick edits: ACDSee
Heavy duty editing: Photoshop
Video:
Sony Vegas 5...nothing beats it in my opinion.
Audio:
Cool Edit Pro...haven't found an audio file type it can't handle. |

Some programs can do video, some audio, etc - but you can find some that are free. You may have to get more than one program if you want all possibilities.
I've never used it, but any-video-converter looks promising ->

One I have used to convert several files with is - MediaCoder - >
http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/
It can be a pain to set up at first but once you get it set it works well, at least on the ones I have used it for.
I have several others I could check out as well.. let me know what specifically you are looking for... |
