OMG! This thing is pissing me off.
It started about a week or two ago. My computer after a random ammount of time (usually a few hours) decides to restart itself. No matter what I'm doing, it just restarts itself. I have, however, noticed that it doesn't do anything in Idle mode.
I've checked everything that I saw could be an immediate problem.
620w PSU is working Fine
Power Cords well seated
Heat shouldn't be doing anything
No viruses, Trojans, or rootkits
And no Ethiopian Witch Doctor put a curse on me.
I've had my computer for about 2 years now, and it has never done anything like this before.
If you have any ideas about what's happening, or better yet a solution to what's happening, please say it. |

Although you don't seem to think heat is an issue, you may want to check your heatsink compound. If the compound has started to dry out and you have reduced heat transfer to the heatsink you could have similar problems.
Is the system overclocked at all?
Have you cleaned out the dust lately? Especially check the processor heatsink fins, video card heatsink and power supply as well as all the intake and exaust fans, 2 years of dust can cause exactly this problem.
You could also try running some diagnostics programs such as Memtest to check the memory or Prime95 to test the processor. There are plenty of tools out there that can help diagnose the problem such as UBCD (DOS) - www.ultimatebootcd.com and UBCD4Win - www.ubcd4win.com. Both of these projects have multiple programs for testing your system and components. Also the forums for both projects can be very helpful and informative.
Hope that helps for starters. |

I concur with Suicide Kid. Sounds like a memory or heat problem to me. Just a warning though, if you use Prime95, do it over night if possible as that will seriously tax your system and needs plenty of time to finish. Best torture test you can get in my opinion.

as suicide kid noted, heat is a possibility if you dont have any temperature sensors. most current mainboards have thermal sensors on the processor, mainboard, video card, and hard drive(i was suprised when i found out abgout the hdd one on mine [sata drive] )
i see you are in california, if you are not too far from a fry's eleactronics, check out this item:

or other fan controller / thermal sensors here:

As soon as i read this I though heat problems as well then I see someone already beat me to it. Yea if you have a pet or smoke or are just plain lazy in cleaning your room dust and other things can wreack havock on your system. I will toss up a pic I have of a system that was in need of a clean out. |

Nah, it wasn't heating. It was one of Windows' stupidest Troubleshooting options.
Apparently, there's some option that automatically restarts a computer once a serious, BSOD-worthy error occurs, without showing the BSOD long enough, if at all; It's for the tech-retarded grandmas out there or something. Anyway, my cousin pointed that out and I turned it off so that he could address the error code on the BSOD.
Well, after turning that damned little thing off, it hasnt hit a single crash yet, even with the toughest of situations. Windows was just being retarded. Go Microsoft for putting something retarded like that on.
For now,
Case closed. |
