All things being equal, and the fact that someone is putting this rig together for you, its not a bad price....he is making about $300 to put it all together, and if he has to add a legit copy of Winblows to it, that cuts into the $300. Overall, Im sure thats about the going rate for a computer like the one you showed specs for.
Old man approval. |

The DVD rom and writer are working amazingly. I might go for 20x.
I was hoping to upgrade my 320 mb Card to a 640...which would blow things away.
And it is a legit copy of windows and norton. |

DONT GET THE 20X !!!! On all my forums on DVD burning/ripping, the performance gain vs the unstableness/noise isnt worth it. Stick with what works.
And, upping to the 640 MB card 'should' add about $300 to the price. |

For The 8800, I'd go for the full 640mb.
Games will require some major large-scale rendering, thus they will require more vid-RAM to get it done (or something along those lines).
If you want to get into games like GRAW, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, and may others (Crysis?), you will need more RAM.
BTW: I've never heard of x20 instability, but I've heard it makes more noise then a hurricane. I'd trust Toughie here, either way. |

As far as the diff goes, the price is almost identical, so cost wasnt a factor.
I use AnyDVD, CloneDvD and DvDShrink for doing ummm, what I do. Whenever I have a problem, I rely heavily on afterdawn forums. Thats where they use, debate, trash and basically use a microscope to determine whats the best of the best when it comes to ripping.
The difference of doing a movie in 30 minutes vs 35 minutes for the problems they keep talking about with the 20Xs is why I recommended sticking with whats been working for the last couple of years.
Im sure there are a couple of brands that dont factor in to any of this, but as he mentioned LitoOn, which is the brand I use, I knew more then I wanted to when it came to the 16 vs 20 X DVD burners. =)
And MM, if you really wanna be cool...... BFG 8800 GTX OCX2. 768 ram.
I gotta say, this is one sexy card!!!! And, its only $569 |

BFG REALLY loads their cards with stuff. Some of their more high-end cards come with T-shirts and such.
Still a great company, though. Between them and eVGA, I'm torn. |

Not to stray too far off topic...this place has everything you'll ever need for DVD ripping, authoring etc. The audio tools found here are amazing.

Nope Chips, thats not off topic at all. I would have mentioned Doom9 as they DEFINITELY have some great info there. I tend to recommend Afterdawn simply because its more geared towards novices, where as Doom9 requires a little more in depth knowledge of what you are talking about when you are searching for info.
Definitely used by me in conjunction of Afterdawn, and glad you mentioned them. |
