I have an old computer with windows Me installed on it. I guess that does not matter because I cannot turn the computer on. It will not boot up, but I have been told that it is still possible to remove data stored on the hard drive. If anyone knows how this can be done, (what cables to use and how to hook it up), please let me know. It is unbelievable the amount of money that they want for data recovery. Thank you, all help is appreciated.

Since it's the boot drive in your old box, the pins would be set as a master drive. I would remove it from the box it's in, switch the pins to make it a slave...then connect it to your current working computer. This assumes you have an extra power connector available and an available connection on a strap to the mb.

You should then be able to see it a just another drive in your current working comp.

Here is a link to a product we use all the time at my company. It's an external enclosure that allows you to plug the hard drive into it, plug a USB cable from the enclosure to a good PC, and pull any and all data you want from the hard drive. Excellent data recovery tool. PM me for more help... Good Idea Good Idea Very Happy

Nice...a simple enclosure to turn an internal into an external. Good Idea

But my idea, although a little more complex...saves ya the $30. Razz

Trust me, it will pay for itself on the next hard drive, or next computer, or when the Motherboard goes, or the IDE or SATA bus fails. A small investment to stave off the cost of a new PC, or lost data. Razz Razz Very Happy

sry chips, my intention was to show a pic of the anime girl known as Me-tan.
an anime fan group made the "OS-tan"s, anime personifications of operating systems, mostly microsoft's. (tan is like chan. an uber cute little sufix a kid would put on a name)

anyways, Me-tan is as ditzy as the OS she represents.. erm as the OS she is Razz
